What an Explainer Video Must Do
An explainer video has 90 seconds to answer three questions:
- •What is this?
- •Why do I need it?
- •How do I get it?
The 5-Part Explainer Script Formula
Part 1: The Problem (0–20 seconds)
"[Audience] spend [time/money] dealing with [problem]. It's frustrating. And it's completely avoidable."
Part 2: The Solution (20–40 seconds)
"[Product] is [simple category] that [core benefit] — so you can [desired outcome] without [main obstacle]."
Part 3: How It Works (40–70 seconds)
"Here's how it works: First, [step 1]. Then [step 2]. Within [timeframe], [result]."
Three steps maximum. Simpler is always better.
Part 4: The Proof (70–80 seconds)
"Over [number] teams use [product] to [result]. [Company name] reduced [metric] by [percentage] in [timeframe]."
Part 5: The CTA (80–90 seconds)
"Try [product] free — no credit card required. [URL]"
Common Explainer Video Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|
|---------|-----|
| Starting with company history | Start with the customer's problem |
|---|---|
| Listing all features | Focus on the one core benefit |
| Using jargon | Replace every technical term with a plain-language equivalent |
| Multiple CTAs | Pick one: sign up, learn more, or watch demo |
| Running over 90 seconds | Cut everything that doesn't answer the 3 core questions |
